Central Vietnam

The middle of the Vietnam, Central Vietnam is a narrow mostly costal region. Along the smaller coastal roads are dotted popular local tourist beaches, while in the higher regions close to the Laos border the Ho Chi Minh road runs though several Natural Reserves.

Some of Vietnams most historic architectural legacies can be seen in this region. The architecture of  Hoi An has several foreign influences, the Japanese who established a community in the 16th century and the Chinese in the center and east of the town in the 18th century, then the French imposing their colonial influences on the south east of the town.

Huế, houses one of Vietnams most significant architectural and political cultural centers, The Citadel. Established by Emperor Gia Long in 1805 and designated a World Heritage site in 1993, it is full of ornate complexes. Within lies the Imperial City, within that, the Forbidden Purple City. Outside of the Citadel spread about Hue´s surrounding countryside to the south are the most elegant Royal Tombs and various Pagodas. Despite the damage during the Indochina Wars it a city of great beauty which is positioned along side of the Perfume River, full of charm and ancient history.

My Son rediscovered in the later 1890s by French archeologists the now ruins was a religious center between the 4th and 13th centuries. The ruins where almost completely destroyed by us bombing during the Vietnam war but they are still a wonderful example of the Cham towers. There are about 20 to walk amongst and a museum which explains their history and decoration in a very compressive manor.

The Vihn Moc tunnels are an underground networks of a darker architecture. They where built to shelter villages during wars and some of the tunnels go as deep as 30 meters. Apart from man-built architect, you can venture into the most magnificent natural structures in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and renowned Huge Sơn Đoòng cave, recorded as the largest cave in the world. The Phong Nha cave, is big enough that you enter via the river in a boat and is Natures architect magical.

Road architects built the infamous Hải Vân Pass which is a scenic pass on the road from Đà Nẵng and Huế, on the National Road 1A. Its panoramic views of Đà Nẵng bay while riding at 500 meters above sea level on a clear day make up for the disappointing short ride.
