Hue is located along the bank of the Song Huong– The Perfume River, originally established as the Capital of unified Viet Nam in 1802, under the Nguyen dynasty until 1945. It was once the the national capital, the political, cultural and religious center of Vietnam under the control of this dynasty. Its a beautiful surroundings and historic sites make it a fascinating place to stop for a few days. To the North is the Citadel, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, to the South are ancient Tombs and many Pagodas as well as the Town´s French Quarter.

Hue Citadel, on the North side of the River was established by Emperor Gia Long in 1805. Its a large walled fortress complex with inner Cities designed and positioned to observe ancient oriental philosophy, and respected the physical conditions of the site as well as military principles.

 

Visiting The Imperial City you enter though a magnificent main entrance Ngo Mon Gate, formed from a large stone slabs on top of which sits a decorative watch tower.

Inside the Imperial City:

  • Imperial Citadel (Dai Noi)
  • Purple Forbidden City 
  • Inner City

Visiting the Tombs of the Emperors located along the Perfume River to the South of the City:

Though out the countryside are located the Tombs of the Nguyen Emperors. Seven out of 13 rulers who sat on the imperial throne where given the honor of their own mausoleums.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe Tombs need to be reached by bicycle, taxi or motor bike, a little hard to find but thats half the fun. Along a few of the roads to reach the Tombs are vendors selling and making incense sticks and their stands are a colorful blend of brightly colored sticks in bundles.

Tomb of Tự Đức was  built for the Nguyễn Emperor Tự Đức and took three years to build from 1864–1867. It is divided into a Temple Area and a Tomb Area. There are many elegant buildings and the tomb was designed by the King him self. Set in a park like surroundings filed with lotus ponds,frangipani trees and a grove of pines.

Thin Mụ Pagoda also called Linh Mụ Pagoda Heavenly Lady pagoda sits in a small temple garden on the Northen  bank of the Perfume river. Its a seven-story octagon tower, Built in 1601 on the order of the first Nguyễn lordsNguyễn Hong, who at that time was the governor of Thuận Hua (now known as Huế). The surround garden is lovely and the colorful dragon headed boats that sit below its steps up to the hill on which its perched will take you on a slow gaunt along the river.
