Nam Du Islands

Most people are smart enough to just venture to Phu Quoc Island. A beautiful island with nice beach resorts that welcome tourists. However a Local vietnamese tattoo artist told me that the locals from Saigon prefer to go to Nam Du.

The ferries to Nam Du leave from the same dock that they do to reach Phu Quoc Island however on arrival you will find that they will NOT sell you a ticket.  Only locals are permitted onto the island.

There are about 21 islands clustered about and Nam Du is one of the inhabited islands. Small shanty villages survive off fishing. Theres a couple of guest houses but they won´t take frying tourists so be prepared to seek out an alternative place to sleep. You can sleep on the beaches either. You can rent a moped of a local on arrival by asking about and find the warmest of people who will welcome you into their homes. Be prepared to stand out like a sore thumb and be encouraged to drink many beers and home made touch with them.

I had brought with me a small tent and had graciously be permitted to camp on one families back patio area and another families beach cove but on arrival not knowing there would be no place to stay slept on the steps of a buddhist temple until politely asked by the monks to depart.

Theres not much to do on the island but eat at your own risk the surplus of strange shell fish and lazy about the locals beach hut locations.
